EyePrint PRO: When Standard Scleral Lenses Are Not Enough

EyePrint PRO is an impression-based custom scleral lens for patients who have failed standard designs. It is a rescue device — not a first-line upgrade — and it works when nothing else can.

What Is EyePrint PRO?

Standard scleral lenses are designed using corneal topography maps and adjusted through trial-and-error fitting. They work well for the vast majority of keratoconus and ocular surface disease patients.

EyePrint PRO takes a different approach: a physical impression mold of the eye — similar to a dental impression — captures every contour of the sclera, conjunctiva, and cornea. The lens is manufactured to match this exact topography.

In a multicenter retrospective study of 44 patients (70 eyes, 2013–2019), 29 of 44 patients had previously failed standard scleral lenses. EyePrint PRO achieved significant visual acuity improvement in this population.

Who Actually Needs EyePrint PRO?

EyePrint PRO is not a better scleral lens — it is a different tool for a specific problem. You may be a candidate if:

Failed standard scleral lenses

You have tried multiple scleral designs (Zenlens, Onefit, Jupiter, etc.) and none can achieve a stable, comfortable fit due to extreme scleral asymmetry or conjunctival irregularity.

Severe conjunctival scarring

Stevens-Johnson syndrome, ocular cicatricial pemphigoid, or chemical burns have left significant scar tissue that standard parametric designs cannot accommodate.

Complex post-surgical anatomy

Multiple prior surgeries — keratoplasty, glaucoma tubes, retinal buckle — have created an eye shape that is too irregular for standard fitting algorithms.

Extreme scleral toricity

The scleral surface is so asymmetric that even multi-zone toric designs (Onefit MED, Europa) cannot achieve adequate alignment.

If you have not yet tried standard scleral lenses, start there. Standard sclerals cost less, are fitted locally, and achieve equivalent outcomes for the vast majority of keratoconus and OSD patients. EyePrint PRO is the right next step only after standard approaches have been exhausted.

EyePrint PRO Providers in Southern California

EyePrint PRO requires a certified provider to take the physical impression and manage the fitting process. UCLA Stein Eye Institute is one of few Southern California practices offering EyePrint PRO fitting.

Our role: we evaluate patients for scleral lens candidacy, fit standard scleral designs first, and refer to certified EyePrint providers when standard sclerals cannot achieve an adequate result. We coordinate care and manage your insurance claim throughout the process.
